Your log file
Your log is read by JavaScript in your own browser. The file, the IP addresses and browser strings in it, and its query strings are never sent to us.
What reaches the server
- To show a report: a summary of counts and top-15 lists (page paths without query strings, referring host names, bot names, probed paths, page views by hour and day). Paths are cut to 200 characters and anything shaped like an e-mail or IP address is removed, in the browser and again on the server. The summary is used to draw the page and then discarded.
- If you save a report: that summary and the name you give it are stored in your notebook until you delete the report or the notebook, or the notebook goes 400 days unopened (unless Plus is running).
- The notebook key: stored only as a hash; your browser keeps the key in a cookie that only this site can read.
- Rate limits: to stop abuse we count new notebooks and the size of saved reports per day by a salted hash of your address, deleted after 3 days. Like every web server, ours keeps standard access logs for a limited time.
Backups
The database is copied nightly (the newest 14 copies are kept) and at each update of the site (the newest 10 are kept on the server, with a copy kept offsite by WeldonPC.com). A deleted notebook leaves those copies as they age out.
No tracking cookies
No analytics services, no tracking or advertising cookies, no third-party fonts, no e-mail. The only thing these pages load from another site is the banner ad described under Advertising, on the pages named there. Payments, once open, go through PayPal, which has its own privacy terms.
Advertising
The home, guide, pricing and about pages and the sample report show one banner ad from AdEngine (adengine.us), the small ad network run by WeldonPC, the company behind this site. For now the ads are for WeldonPC's own services. The log reader, the reports you make, your notebook, and the terms and privacy pages show no ad and load nothing from adengine.us, so the ad script never runs on a page where your log or your reports are open.
To show an ad, your browser loads a script from adengine.us, asks it for one banner, loads the banner image, and reports once that the page was viewed and once that the banner was shown. Like any website, adengine.us receives your IP address, your browser type and the address of this site with those requests (the site's address only, never the page's).
- No cookies, no profile. AdEngine sets no cookies, gives you no ID and does not track you from site to site.
- How your IP address is used. adengine.us looks up the approximate city for your IP address in a location database kept on its own server (nothing is sent to anyone else), so that ads meant for one area are shown only there. It also uses the address to count each ad view or click only once and to leave out robots and WeldonPC's own office traffic. The address is not stored with the counts; the temporary entries made from it expire within six hours and are cleared from the server within two days.
- What is kept. Daily totals only: page views for this site, and views and clicks for each ad. The adengine.us web server also keeps a standard access log (IP address, time, address requested, referring site, browser) for security; it is deleted on a rolling schedule.
- Clicking an ad passes through adengine.us, which counts the click, and then opens the advertiser's site, which has its own privacy policy.
- Nothing about you is sold or shared.
